Not too sure what we are talking about? Well here is a list of commonly used phrases we use on the JOYO website that might help a little bit. If you look at Guitar Effects by type you will find lots of demos, more details, some reviews of all of our pedals and guitar amps. If you need any help, pleask ask.

Amplifier Simulation

Amp sims recreate the sounds of classic guitar amplifiers made, but instead of a heavy amp to lug about or take up room, the tones are recreated by a guitar effect pedal.

Bass Effects

Its all about the bass, whilst modulation and spacial effects work very well across all types of instrument, overdrive and distortion really needs to account for those lower frequencies.

Chorus

Chorus divides the original signal and adds it back into the original (lightly modified) adding richness to the sound. Its a classic and sounds as good now as it did in the 80’s.

Compression

Even out volume of notes, or add sustain, compression is the most subtle guitar effect but will become one that can improve the sound of your playing.

Delay

Delay generates an echo that returns and repeats depending on the setting. The repeated sound is a precise copy of the original that you play, and the volume of the echo weakens with each repetition. Achieve Shadows slapback styles with a short time setting, or go for pink floyd echo trippy-ness.. Distortion Distortion is even more aggressive than overdrive, has a longer reverb and can be reliably found in all metal genres.

Equalisation

You definitely know equalisers from HiFi players. They serve to amplify or reduce certain frequencies such as bass, midrange and treble. These effects strengthen/weaken the frequency in the given range of roughly o +- 12 to 20 decibels.

Flanger

Sounds like a plane whooshing about your head.

Fuzz

Fuzz is a more aggressive style of compressed distortion using an excessive amount of gain to push your guitar signal beyond its limits

Amp Head

A head is simply the name for an amplifier without a speaker. Your friends won't have heads on top of amps, they'll have heads on top of speakers (with the head driving the speaker). The "basic guitar amp" also known as a combo tends to be an amplifier and speaker combined in one cabinet.

Loopers

Record, overdub, play along with yourself, repeat.

Modulation Effects

Modulation is a category of effects that do not intend to change drive or distort but manipulate the sound in a particular way so phaser, flanger, chorus, tremolo etc would all be considered modulating effects.

Multi Effects

A multi effect pedal will contain many guitar effects inside one unit that can be adjusted and saved.

Noise Gates

In simple terms it is the opposite of a compressor, which squashes signals above a threshold, such as loud attacks from the start of musical notes, noise gates squash out signals that register below the threshold. So reducing noise from noisy pedals or high gain amps.

Octave / Pitch Effects

These pedals can drop your notes down or push them up higher where your fingers cannot reach. The Octave pedal mixes the input signal with a synthesised version whose musical tone is an octave lower or higher than the original. ... Hendrix used an octave-fuzz pedal

Overdrive Effects

Overdrive effects simulates the ‘overdriving’ of a tube amp, with the resulting sound of the electric guitar being characteristically a bit ‘cracked’ and ‘gritty’. Overdrive took hold in music during the 1960s, it warms up your clean guitar tone without distorting it.

Patch Cables

These are the shorter cables that join your guitar effect pedals together. They are a 6.35mm mono cable, exactly the same as a guitar lead.

Pedal Controllers - PXL

A lot of pedals? Try changing 5 pedals at once without falling over. A pedal controller allows you to program all of that in.

Phaser Effects

Phaser effects change the volume in the chosen frequency band while also adding to the original signal its phase shifted copy. In practice, it seems as if the phaser is breathing.

Guitar Effect Power Supply

That thing with a plug on it, you can get a single power supply, a daisy chain, a multi power supply, filtered, isolated...

Reverb

Reverb is one of the most frequently used effects in music, guitars, keyboards, vocals the effect delivers a spacial sound ranging from a small room up to a large hall.

Tremolo

Tremolo is one of the oldest effects, and thanks to its simple technical realisation, it is often built into guitar amps. The effect regularly adjusts volume and strength of the signal, the speed of which can be adjusted. When set properly, a nice, swinging and pulsating effect is achieved without changing the resulting character or height of the sound.

Volume & Expression Effects

Fade in, Boost it, crank it up, okay turn it down…. Fade out… in stompbox pedal format or wah pedal style..

Wah

A wah-wah pedal (or simply wah pedal) alters the tone and frequencies of the guitar signal to create a distinctive sound, mimicking the human voice saying the onomatopoeic name "wah-wah". Auto wah or manual wah wah to get your funk on.

JOYO Jf-14 American Sound Guitar Effect Pedal

The JOYO American sound guitar effect pedals is one of the UKs most popular Amp simulators from the JOYO first series of pedals. The pedal is designed to introduce the right kind of overdrive, just like an alnico 12-inch speaker pushed to the limits, adding more natural distortion to an already saturated tube.

The sound you hear on the 60's surf classics, as well as the country and rockabilly hits from the 50's is the classic fender clean sound. This warm sound which first emerged in 1953. Some describe the tone of the amp as dark, as there is less high end, but it features a full 3-band EQ in case that's really not what you're looking for. This pedal will also do the classic sounds of the early Fender Amps cranked right up, that brilliant growling, saturated overdriven tweed sound. This sound can be heard on countless recordings, from Eric Clapton through to Billy Gibbons.

Perhaps the greatest feature of this pedal is the fact that it has inbuilt cabinet emulation meaning you can go from the pedal directly to a mixing desk, a DAW or directly to your computer/laptop with a jack to usb lead. So this pedal is essentially a DI. You can use it instead of an amp and it can save your gig if your amp fails, just put it at the end of all your other pedals and set it clean like your amp then just take the output from the American sound straight to the desk. Gig saved. Or by going direct into a DAW or even your laptop you can record direct from the pedal.

This JOYO pedal has the smooth, subtle overdrive everyone expects from fender-style tube amps near full volume. When used as a clean boost you get more liquid / sonic gold. Compression and fatness that you usually don't hear from a pedal. True-bypass wiring leaves the tone unaffected when the pedal is switched off, while quality pots, jacks and components ensure that the sound it equally as impressive when you get going.

Reproduces the sound of a Fender 57 Deluxe amp.

Fender Deluxe Reverb vs Joyo American Sound Amp Simulation Pedal Blind Test

Close your eyes and feel the JOYO !

Shane from In the Blues demos the JOYO American and says 'This is the Joyo American Sound Amplifier Emulation Pedal. It is basically a Tech-21 Blonde Clone which is modelled from the Black-Face amplifiers which include the Deluxe Reverb all the way through to Tweed Fender amps. This demo of the Joyo American Sound pedal has the pedal plugged directly into my computer interface/sound card so there's no other amp being mic'd up. This is an amplifier emulation pedal so the idea is, you can use this to record with instead of a microphone and a Fender amp. This makes it perfect for recording or live shows as a backup "amp".' Check his You Tube channel for more pedal wisdom!

Ok so if you plug directly into your soundcard/PA, yes, it gives you fender-like amp tones. Great. (Go watch the youtube reviews to see how close they are - spoiler...pretty damn close. How? No idea. Witchcraft maybe.) BUT the best part...if you play it into an actual amp (we did this with a fender champ100 set on clean so YMMV) it acts like a very versatile distortion/overdrive box, giving you everything from silky clean tones to edge of breakup, subtle overdrive to melt-your-face-overdrive, crunch to ultra-dirt fuzz. Just play with the level, voice and gain along with the low/mid/high controls and you can coax an absolutely huge array of sounds from it. We also tried an EHX boost in front of it which added another variety of sounds. And it actually sounds GOOD too...not cheap. I would recommend this even at a much much higher price, so for the price it actually is, it's a no brainer. I'll certainly be looking at what some of the other pedals in the series have to offer.

This might be the best value piece of gear I own. It's incredible - plugging it directly into an audio interface to record is a gamechanger. I was considering a strymon iridium at almost 10x the price and thought I'd try this first due the positive reviews. Sounds better than my mic'd up fender hot rod deluxe, much less hassle and doesn't annoy the neighbours! Bought an AC Tone as well which is on the way :)

Good bit of kit with great tome control, can give humbucker guitars a lift to a single coil (ish), only down side it creates slight interference/noise when off in a pedal chain but I leave it on all the time! I am so used to it that everything sounds a bit dark/muddy without it.

just made a review about this pedal on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHh1FxTHR3U as expected for being popular, this pedal is good enough to use directly to PA system., it has good fenderish sound, it's loud and pristine.. aaand it's affordable. good job

Great piece of kit at a very budget price. It has got a range of very convincing Fenderish tones. I'm using it during lockdown with JamKazam for online jamming with friends. It is all analogue so does not add any latency to the signal.

What is an IR file ? Impulse Response - Guitars
I also get asked about IR files, particularly as a couple of our products use IR files. It makes sense for me to try and explain in basic terms what an IR file is, why you might be interested in using one. With guitar pedals you have analog and digital. IR files are used in digital pedals, we are taking a digital snapshot of audio. When you use a preset on a computer, you load it in right?.. That is a the principal of the IR file.   On the JOYO Cab Box it simulates different guitar cabinets/speaker types & Microphones. In order to recreate these sounds, we have 'recorde..
