Not too sure what we are talking about? Well here is a list of commonly used phrases we use on the JOYO website that might help a little bit. If you look at Guitar Effects by type you will find lots of demos, more details, some reviews of all of our pedals and guitar amps. If you need any help, pleask ask.

Amplifier Simulation

Amp sims recreate the sounds of classic guitar amplifiers made, but instead of a heavy amp to lug about or take up room, the tones are recreated by a guitar effect pedal.

Bass Effects

Its all about the bass, whilst modulation and spacial effects work very well across all types of instrument, overdrive and distortion really needs to account for those lower frequencies.

Chorus

Chorus divides the original signal and adds it back into the original (lightly modified) adding richness to the sound. Its a classic and sounds as good now as it did in the 80’s.

Compression

Even out volume of notes, or add sustain, compression is the most subtle guitar effect but will become one that can improve the sound of your playing.

Delay

Delay generates an echo that returns and repeats depending on the setting. The repeated sound is a precise copy of the original that you play, and the volume of the echo weakens with each repetition. Achieve Shadows slapback styles with a short time setting, or go for pink floyd echo trippy-ness.. Distortion Distortion is even more aggressive than overdrive, has a longer reverb and can be reliably found in all metal genres.

Equalisation

You definitely know equalisers from HiFi players. They serve to amplify or reduce certain frequencies such as bass, midrange and treble. These effects strengthen/weaken the frequency in the given range of roughly o +- 12 to 20 decibels.

Flanger

Sounds like a plane whooshing about your head.

Fuzz

Fuzz is a more aggressive style of compressed distortion using an excessive amount of gain to push your guitar signal beyond its limits

Amp Head

A head is simply the name for an amplifier without a speaker. Your friends won't have heads on top of amps, they'll have heads on top of speakers (with the head driving the speaker). The "basic guitar amp" also known as a combo tends to be an amplifier and speaker combined in one cabinet.

Loopers

Record, overdub, play along with yourself, repeat.

Modulation Effects

Modulation is a category of effects that do not intend to change drive or distort but manipulate the sound in a particular way so phaser, flanger, chorus, tremolo etc would all be considered modulating effects.

Multi Effects

A multi effect pedal will contain many guitar effects inside one unit that can be adjusted and saved.

Noise Gates

In simple terms it is the opposite of a compressor, which squashes signals above a threshold, such as loud attacks from the start of musical notes, noise gates squash out signals that register below the threshold. So reducing noise from noisy pedals or high gain amps.

Octave / Pitch Effects

These pedals can drop your notes down or push them up higher where your fingers cannot reach. The Octave pedal mixes the input signal with a synthesised version whose musical tone is an octave lower or higher than the original. ... Hendrix used an octave-fuzz pedal

Overdrive Effects

Overdrive effects simulates the ‘overdriving’ of a tube amp, with the resulting sound of the electric guitar being characteristically a bit ‘cracked’ and ‘gritty’. Overdrive took hold in music during the 1960s, it warms up your clean guitar tone without distorting it.

Patch Cables

These are the shorter cables that join your guitar effect pedals together. They are a 6.35mm mono cable, exactly the same as a guitar lead.

Pedal Controllers - PXL

A lot of pedals? Try changing 5 pedals at once without falling over. A pedal controller allows you to program all of that in.

Phaser Effects

Phaser effects change the volume in the chosen frequency band while also adding to the original signal its phase shifted copy. In practice, it seems as if the phaser is breathing.

Guitar Effect Power Supply

That thing with a plug on it, you can get a single power supply, a daisy chain, a multi power supply, filtered, isolated...

Reverb

Reverb is one of the most frequently used effects in music, guitars, keyboards, vocals the effect delivers a spacial sound ranging from a small room up to a large hall.

Tremolo

Tremolo is one of the oldest effects, and thanks to its simple technical realisation, it is often built into guitar amps. The effect regularly adjusts volume and strength of the signal, the speed of which can be adjusted. When set properly, a nice, swinging and pulsating effect is achieved without changing the resulting character or height of the sound.

Volume & Expression Effects

Fade in, Boost it, crank it up, okay turn it down…. Fade out… in stompbox pedal format or wah pedal style..

Wah

A wah-wah pedal (or simply wah pedal) alters the tone and frequencies of the guitar signal to create a distinctive sound, mimicking the human voice saying the onomatopoeic name "wah-wah". Auto wah or manual wah wah to get your funk on.

JOYO PXL-Live Effect Pedal Loop Midi 8 or 2x4 Controller

The JOYO PXL-Live, the newest member of the JOYO PXL series programmable pedals controllers - pxl4,pxl8, pxl-pro. Send commands via midi cc and midi program to control your computer based recording software. For musicians who are beginning to juggle lots of equipment, the pxl-live will be the perfect pedal loop and midi controller enabling you to turn effects on or off in banks, without tap dancing all over the place.

The main menu options of the pxl live are:

  • EH - Edit the high loops, also known as loop 2, or, if you are counting from 1-8, eh will edit loops 5-8.
  • EL - Edit the low loops, also known as loop 1, or, loops 1-4 (from right to left on the pxl-live)
  • ET - Edit the behaviour of the two trigger outputs when selecting a preset.
  • EB - Edit the behaviour of the two trigger outputs when switching the selected preset into bypass
  • EM - Edit trigger mode: switch between momentary or latch mode. Which one applies to your depends on the equipment you are trying to switch. Consult the manual of the gear you want to switch to identify which to use.
  • EP - Edit the polarity of the trigger. Is the light up trigger led on or is it off? This also depends on how your connected equipment works. Play around with this setting if your experience problems. Ma    under ma you can program two individual midi messages that are sent out when the preset is selected. Please consult the midi section of this manual for more information
  • MB - Under MB you can program two individual midi messages that are sent out when the preset is  switched to bypass. You might want to send program change message to your amp when putting the pxl-live into bypass so that you can play a distorted rhythm sound without any effects and switch to a clean sound with effects on when engaging the preset again. Please consult the midi section of this manual for more information.

A continuous controller can control and give values to a number of different devices: every midi enabled device is able to define which cc messages their device can receive. You probably know those little joysticks or wheels on keyboards/synths. They work in a similar way, sending cc messages for pitch and modulation. When you are changing the volume on a synthesizer sound, you are sending a cc message.

In our case with the JOYO PXL live, you can send a cc message to an amplifier to change the level of a certain channel, as long as the amp is set up to receive and react to that message. You can use it to change the delay time on a midi capable delay or even to control the looper functions (rec/overdub, play, stop) on delays that have continuous controllers mapped to those functions.

Midi channels - using the JOYO PXL Live with midi you can send 2 program changes to 2 separate devices on different channels, for example. Midi cables can carry up to 16 different midi streams on 16 different channels. Simply set your receiving device to the correct channel and it will only react to midi messages that are being sent on that channel and ignore everything else that might also be carried on the same cable. This way you can daisy-chain several devices and each device can be talked to independently.

The possibilities are endless and are only limited by the type of gear you have and by how creative you want to get with your pxl-live.

"Sometimes a song can require quite a complicated patch, this can mean something close to tap dancing on your pedals if you're not careful!  So that's where these pedal switches come in handy. Pre program your patches for ease of use for that crucial live situation when timing is everything!"  Matt UK product guru.

I've had a PXL Live for some time now and I've nothing but good things to say about it. It made my effect switching sooooo much simpler, I dont know how I got by without it. Super-simple to set up and program and no noise or discernable lag when switching. There are more fully-featured switchers out there but at twice the price. This switcher be can't be beaten for VFM. Highly recommended. If it got nicked, I'd buy another without hesitation.

This product is the best thing i have ever owned, i have ran 2 amps, 8 pedals and managed to manipulate all them perfectly with one press of a button. Why this product isn't more than the price above i don't know, so far i have met a lot of walls with my equipment and overcome every one of them with the looper. If there was any point id buy two just because it so good, thank you wizards of JOYO you absolute bunch of legends.
