Not too sure what we are talking about? Well here is a list of commonly used phrases we use on the JOYO website that might help a little bit. If you look at Guitar Effects by type you will find lots of demos, more details, some reviews of all of our pedals and guitar amps. If you need any help, pleask ask.

Amplifier Simulation

Amp sims recreate the sounds of classic guitar amplifiers made, but instead of a heavy amp to lug about or take up room, the tones are recreated by a guitar effect pedal.

Bass Effects

Its all about the bass, whilst modulation and spacial effects work very well across all types of instrument, overdrive and distortion really needs to account for those lower frequencies.

Chorus

Chorus divides the original signal and adds it back into the original (lightly modified) adding richness to the sound. Its a classic and sounds as good now as it did in the 80’s.

Compression

Even out volume of notes, or add sustain, compression is the most subtle guitar effect but will become one that can improve the sound of your playing.

Delay

Delay generates an echo that returns and repeats depending on the setting. The repeated sound is a precise copy of the original that you play, and the volume of the echo weakens with each repetition. Achieve Shadows slapback styles with a short time setting, or go for pink floyd echo trippy-ness.. Distortion Distortion is even more aggressive than overdrive, has a longer reverb and can be reliably found in all metal genres.

Equalisation

You definitely know equalisers from HiFi players. They serve to amplify or reduce certain frequencies such as bass, midrange and treble. These effects strengthen/weaken the frequency in the given range of roughly o +- 12 to 20 decibels.

Flanger

Sounds like a plane whooshing about your head.

Fuzz

Fuzz is a more aggressive style of compressed distortion using an excessive amount of gain to push your guitar signal beyond its limits

Amp Head

A head is simply the name for an amplifier without a speaker. Your friends won't have heads on top of amps, they'll have heads on top of speakers (with the head driving the speaker). The "basic guitar amp" also known as a combo tends to be an amplifier and speaker combined in one cabinet.

Loopers

Record, overdub, play along with yourself, repeat.

Modulation Effects

Modulation is a category of effects that do not intend to change drive or distort but manipulate the sound in a particular way so phaser, flanger, chorus, tremolo etc would all be considered modulating effects.

Multi Effects

A multi effect pedal will contain many guitar effects inside one unit that can be adjusted and saved.

Noise Gates

In simple terms it is the opposite of a compressor, which squashes signals above a threshold, such as loud attacks from the start of musical notes, noise gates squash out signals that register below the threshold. So reducing noise from noisy pedals or high gain amps.

Octave / Pitch Effects

These pedals can drop your notes down or push them up higher where your fingers cannot reach. The Octave pedal mixes the input signal with a synthesised version whose musical tone is an octave lower or higher than the original. ... Hendrix used an octave-fuzz pedal

Overdrive Effects

Overdrive effects simulates the ‘overdriving’ of a tube amp, with the resulting sound of the electric guitar being characteristically a bit ‘cracked’ and ‘gritty’. Overdrive took hold in music during the 1960s, it warms up your clean guitar tone without distorting it.

Patch Cables

These are the shorter cables that join your guitar effect pedals together. They are a 6.35mm mono cable, exactly the same as a guitar lead.

Pedal Controllers - PXL

A lot of pedals? Try changing 5 pedals at once without falling over. A pedal controller allows you to program all of that in.

Phaser Effects

Phaser effects change the volume in the chosen frequency band while also adding to the original signal its phase shifted copy. In practice, it seems as if the phaser is breathing.

Guitar Effect Power Supply

That thing with a plug on it, you can get a single power supply, a daisy chain, a multi power supply, filtered, isolated...

Reverb

Reverb is one of the most frequently used effects in music, guitars, keyboards, vocals the effect delivers a spacial sound ranging from a small room up to a large hall.

Tremolo

Tremolo is one of the oldest effects, and thanks to its simple technical realisation, it is often built into guitar amps. The effect regularly adjusts volume and strength of the signal, the speed of which can be adjusted. When set properly, a nice, swinging and pulsating effect is achieved without changing the resulting character or height of the sound.

Volume & Expression Effects

Fade in, Boost it, crank it up, okay turn it down…. Fade out… in stompbox pedal format or wah pedal style..

Wah

A wah-wah pedal (or simply wah pedal) alters the tone and frequencies of the guitar signal to create a distinctive sound, mimicking the human voice saying the onomatopoeic name "wah-wah". Auto wah or manual wah wah to get your funk on.

JOYO Zombie Bantamp Guitar Amp head 20w Pre Amp Tube Hybrid

The JOYO Zombie micro guitar amp head blends valve and solid state guitar amplifier technology, resulting in a tiny amp head that can produce an immense high wall of sound. The JOYO Bantamp series are arguably the most feature rich & versatile mini amp heads available at this price in the UK !

JOYO Zombie micro Amp Features

1 x 12AX7 Preamp tube
Clean Channel
Distortion Channel
FX Loop
Bluetooth
Headphone Out
Built in Cab Speaker Amp Simulation
Rated power:20W
Speaker impedance:8Ω/16Ω

The Zombie has a 1 x 12AX7 Preamp tube - The ability to reproduce the sound of the instrument was a key factor in assessing a tube for the JOYO Bantamp series. The 12AX7 pre amp tube produces the warm smooth overdrive tones that do not clip tone as a typical fixed state amp head would. The Tube Pre amp has the sonic focus of phattening tone stages and keeps your guitar sounding true to its original tone.

Clean Channel

With 2 channels flick the amp to the CLEAN channel and use with your array of guitar pedals. A two channel amp makes a guitar head twice as versatile as alternatives and a makes great companion for musicians at practice or on the road. The zombie will keep it clean and puts everything in place for the drive of your life.

Distortion Channel

The ZOMBIE comes alive with its low gain settings, you may want to use your favourite overdrive pedals to push it even further into higher gain territory with your own unique flavour. Push the drive and you will hear the Zombie scream pure terror. You may actually benefit from an additional Noise Gate to control!

FX Loop

The FX loop on a guitar amplifier enables you to put your modulated based effects (Phasers,  Flanger,  tremolo and Chorus) after the Zombie delivers its drive magic. The FX loop keeps the modulated effects pure and will prevent them from becoming muddied from the amp gain.

Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity

Pair your Bluetooth device to the Zombie and jam along to your favourite tracks, connect your external device via Bluetooth and play your audio tracks cleanly through the amps Bluetooth receiver channel. We find that this is the great way to practice guitar with and to learn new songs without a big tangle of wires.

Headphone Out with Built in Cab Speaker Amp Simulation

The amp has a speaker out rated at 8Ω and can also be operated at 16Ω.

Careful, the amp is small, but 20 Watts is loud and will deliver a handful.  If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation, you get the same great tone as you would from a 150 watt mega amp.

Once you start working with this amp, you will soon forget its size.  You will not forget the very affordable price and amazing tone it delivers.  It will feel as if you are playing through a much bigger head amp and your audience just won’t believe where your sound is really coming from.

You can tell them, this is the new JOYO Zombie & there is no escape from the high gain sound of an undead boogie man.

I have a peavy valve king which is technically classed as a “budget” valve amp. It suits its purpose for what I need it for but I can’t use it at home. I got the zombie and bought a single cab with a vintage 30 in it for me to use during isolation. The combination of the two is just brilliant. These days I don’t turn the gain all the way up and you really don’t need to with this amp anyway. You can keep it at about 12-1 o’clock and it’s plenty. I do thicken it up with a TS9. Sweeping through the mids with the tone knob is great. Again, set it to about 1 o’clock and you get a good top snap with a tight bottom end. For such a small amp it goes a long way. I have already recommended it to all of my guitar player friends and can’t wait for them to try it out when we can all hang out together again. Works great with a cab sim out of the FX send to use in the studio too. I couldn’t be happier.
